LA VERNE/SAN DIMAS – The Bonita Unified School District Board of Education on May 6 appointed Krista Chakmak – a parent, school volunteer, Save the Heartbeat Foundation volunteer and member of the City of La Verne Youth and Family Action Committee – as its newest member.

Chakmak, who will serve the seven months remaining in the term of retired member Matthew Lyons, was chosen unanimously from among four candidates interviewed by the board.

“Bonita Unified serves the students and parents of two exceptional communities, and I am honored to have this opportunity to serve alongside its current leadership as we continue to focus on preparing all students to live their purpose, especially during these extraordinary times,” Chakmak said. “We will continue to succeed through our core values of equity, mastery and a focus on results.”

Chakmak began her school journey at Bonita Unified’s Allen Avenue Elementary in San Dimas and graduated from Bonita High School. Her children attend Roynon Elementary in La Verne, where Chakmak serves as a PTA board member.

“Ms. Chakmak was our selection from among three very strong candidates who are all great supporters of Bonita Unified schools,” Board of Education President Glenn Creiman said. “We were lucky to have such a difficult decision to make and hope the other candidates continue working with us even as we welcome Ms. Chakmak as our newest board member.”

Chakmak will complete the term that ends in November of this year, when an election will be held for the seat’s next term.
“We extend Ms. Chakmak our warmest welcome and look forward to working with her as the Board continues to fulfill our mission on behalf of our 10,000 students,” Superintendent Carl Coles said.
