Lynwood Unified School District
New Mission Statement Focuses on Diversity, Community Engagement
Lynwood – Lynwood Unified has adopted a new mission statement that emphasizes the District’s commitment to equity for all students while contributing to a diverse, global society.
The District placed an increased focus on the inclusion of all voices in the community through equity, access and justice. The revamped mission was developed during a series of meetings by the Lynwood Unified Strategic Planning Team, a 30-member group includes students, parents, teachers and community members.
“It’s critical that we continually refine our District objectives to ensure we are best serving all of our students and families in the best way possible,” LUSD Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite said. “Our new mission statement reflects our intention to listen to all the diverse voices we have in Lynwood.”
The new statement reads: The mission of the Lynwood Unified School District, the model urban school district, is to ensure each student fearlessly achieves their highest academic and personal aspirations while contributing to a diverse, global society through an evolving system distinguished by:
• People of great character who inspire and lead by example
• The instilling of courage to be creative
• The transformative uses of technology
• Safe and clean environments
• The inclusion of all voices in our community through equity, access and justice
District leaders are also incorporating input from students, parents and employees in other aspects of school governance. Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite met with Firebaugh High School students in September to get feedback on school practices during the year’s first Student Advisory Council. Crosthwaite will meet with other schools and students throughout the year to ensure their involvement.
Lynwood Unified’s Strategic Planning Team will next meet in November to assess the District’s progress toward achieving its mission.
“The diversity of Lynwood is what enriches our community and makes it special,” Lynwood Unified Board of Education President Gary Hardie Jr. said. “We will continue to use that diversity as a resource to enhance our ideas and achieve our goals.”
