Lynwood – Six Lynwood Unified schools have been recognized with gold, silver and bronze awards by the California Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Coalition for their efforts to create a positive campus culture and increase student engagement.

Roosevelt Elementary School, led by Principal Adolfo Rodas and PBIS coach Domitila Aguilar-Milan, has earned a gold designation for its exceptional implementation of the program. Roosevelt uses a variety of initiatives, including a Bear Bucks reward system that incentivizes students to make good decisions; a PBIS student store and a book of the month program.

“We are proud of our students who have created a culture of positive collaboration and strong support of one another,” Rodas said. “We are also inspired by the great PBIS work throughout the District, which has helped to raise our level of engagement.”

Roosevelt is joined by silver recipients Lindbergh, Will Rogers and Wilson elementary schools and bronze winners Lugo Elementary and Hosler Middle School.

PBIS aims to create a positive school setting through strategies that define, teach and support appropriate student behaviors. Aided by the framework, Lynwood Unified educators closely monitor students’ behavior, attendance and academic performance, taking steps to provide additional support in each area as needed.

Lynwood Unified schools are supported by PBIS coaches who help each site apply strategies to best suit their needs.

Lynwood Unified’s six schools will be recognized at the California PBIS Coalition Conference, held Oct. 28-29 in Sacramento. The conference will feature training that focuses on improving academic gains, cultural responsiveness and classroom management.

“I want to congratulate each of our schools for their exceptional work in the PBIS program and commitment to supporting each other,” LUSD Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite said. “Through the dedicated work of teachers, students and staff, we have truly created an ideal school environment in which our students may flourish.”
