Rio Hondo College to Host Boys & Girls Club Members for Project-Based Learning Summer Camp
WHAT: Rio Hondo College will host 45 members of the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier at Camp Rio, a two-week exploration of College programs, science, career technical education and physical activities.
The program was piloted in 2016 and officially launched in 2017. In 2018, it expanded to focus on exciting project-based learning summer activities designed to inspire interest by children ages 11-13 in college attendance. This year, the College is partnering with the Network for Entrepreneurship Teaching to offer a business concept/entrepreneurship component.
WHEN: 12:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, July 15-17 and July 22-24; 11:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays, July 18 and 25
WHERE: Rio Hondo College, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier
DETAILS: Students will choose one of three tracks: coding, digital photography and electronic music. All students will participate in afternoon activities that include soccer, volleyball and basketball.
On Thursdays, students will present projects created during their immersive experience and enjoy a trip to the College pool along with a closing celebration. Participating students also will receive T-shirts, ball caps and backpacks.
MEDIA: Best day for in-class photos will be day two and three of the program. Thursday presentations are also strong photo opportunities.
