Kenmore, Santa Fe Schools Earn Top Los Angeles Schools Award
BALDWIN PARK – Baldwin Park Unified’s Kenmore Elementary and Santa Fe Fundamental School were recognized on May 4 during the Top Schools LA: Leading the Way for Educational Equity conference for strong results in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics proficiency for low-income Latino students in 2017-18.
Kenmore and Santa Fe earned the Los Angeles County Top Schools Award for providing high-quality education for all students and successfully narrowing the achievement gap.
“We are honored to receive this award,” Kenmore Principal Jane Sattari said. “Kenmore teachers have high expectations for our students and they are committed to giving them the strategies they need to be successful.”
On the California School Dashboard, Kenmore increased ELA proficiency by 10.6 percentage points and stands at 22.3 points above the state average. Santa Fe increased in ELA by 15.2 points and sits 27.6 points above the state average.
In mathematics, Santa Fe increased 8.8 points in math proficiency.
“Baldwin Park Unified is so proud to have Kenmore and Santa Fe representing our District and living our mission to ensure high achievement for all learners,” Baldwin Park Unified Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza said. “BPUSD is home to dedicated teachers, administrators and staff who support our students as they achieve their goals.”
To be considered for the distinction, schools must meet or exceed the statewide proficiency rates in English and or math for low-income African Americans and Latinos. Schools also need to enroll at least four percent low-income African Americans and or 43 percent low-income Latinos.
Schools that meet the above criteria can be eliminated for low academic performance on the California Dashboard and high suspension rates.
