  • West Covina Unified School District Breaks Ground on Performing Arts Center

    West Covina Unified’s Board of Education ceremonially broke ground on a 650-seat Performing Arts Center on Oct. 27, launching construction on a flagship facility where students can showcase their artistic talent. Housed at West Covina High School, the West Covina Unified Performing Arts Center will offer dedicated performance and practice spaces for the high school’s visual and performing arts programs, as well as a venue for all West Covina Unified schools to stage visual and performing arts events. The $31 million Performing Arts Center, funded by the voter-approved Measure ES, is expected to open in fall 2022.

  • West Covina Unified Leaders, Community Celebrate Completion of Edgewood Event Center

    Cheered on by city officials and District administrators, West Covina Unified Board of Education members on Sept. 8 cut a ribbon strung across the gates to Edgewood IB Schools, welcoming the community to tour the new Edgewood Event Center. The Event Center features a 350-seat auditorium and freestanding seats for District and school stage events and meetings, and houses Edgewood IB Schools’ career technical education programs, offering studios and classrooms for gaming design, video production, International Baccalaureate dance, and theater production.

  • West Covina Unified Celebrates Newly Completed Edgewood Sports Complex

    West Covina Unified high school athletes dove into a new Olympic-size pool on Sept. 22 to celebrate the completion of a state-of-the-art sports complex as West Covina Unified Board of Education members, administrators and community leaders cheered. The latest of the District’s Measure ES-funded projects hosts an Olympic-size swimming pool, thermal shade structures that will reduce pool heating costs and bleachers that can accommodate 350 people. The complex also includes four locker rooms, two digital scoreboards capable of video playback, a high-quality sound system, and updated basketball courts.

West Covina Unified Opens Enrollment for Dual Language Immersion

West Covina Unified School District has opened 2019-20 enrollment for its Spanish and Mandarin dual language immersion (DLI) programs. Orangewood will offer Mandarin DLI for the first time to an inaugural kindergarten class and Spanish DLI for transitional kindergarten through fourth grade. West Covina Unified Early College Academy Students Explore Eco Issues

Nearly 60 freshmen from West Covina Unified’s Mt. SAC Early College Academy dazzled parents and educators with presentations on ecofriendly burials, invasive species, light pollution and fast fashion during the Academy’s first-ever Environmental Issues Fair on March 15. The fair capped the first major interdisciplinary project at the Academy, a dual-enrollment public high school that provides students with up to two years of transferrable college credit as they earn their diplomas. Mt. SAC Early College Academy Orientation to Welcome New Students

West Covina Unified’s Mt. SAC Early College Academy will welcome new students for orientation from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 7, offering a glimpse of campus life and academics. The dual-enrollment high school provides students the opportunity to earn a diploma and up to two years of transferable college credit simultaneously.

West Covina Unified to Engage Families with Parent University Workshops

West Covina Unified will hold its latest Parent University workshop on Wednesday, March 6, offering tips on executive functioning and organizational skills, student behavior and homework tips. The workshop will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the WCUSD office, 171 W. Merced Ave., West Covina. The evening session may also be attended via a Google Hangouts video call.

West Covina Unified Named to 9th Annual AP District Honor Roll

West Covina Unified was named to College Board’s ninth annual AP District Honor Roll for its commitment to increasing student access to college-prep Advanced Placement courses while increasing the percentage of students earning passing scores of 3 or higher. West Covina High School, which offers 27 different AP courses, was recognized by the Board of Education for its efforts in boosting AP student success during a Feb. 12 meeting.

West Covina Unified Set to Mandarin Dual Language Immersion Program

Families from across the San Gabriel Valley are invited to Orangewood Elementary’s Parent Information Night at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 11 to learn about the school’s new Mandarin Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program, now enrolling for its 2019-20 kindergarten class. Parents can meet Orangewood’s principal and learn how the school provides a global education pathway through dual language immersion and International Baccalaureate programs.
