San Gabriel Unified Continuation Students Advance to State History Day

San Gabriel Unified’s Del Mar High School will advance seven students to the History Day California competition, to be held Friday, May 10 to Sunday, May 12, after earning top scores at History Day L.A. on March 9. Del Mar – the only continuation school to compete in the regional competition – swept four categories with projects highlighting redlining, a process of injustice and discrimination that prevented people of color from buying houses.

Gabrielino High to Advance 31 to State Speech and Debate Tournament

San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School will advance 31 students to the California High School Speech Association state tournament, held Friday, May 3 to Sunday, May 5 at Cal State Long Beach. The program is among the school’s winningest and recently captured its 22nd consecutive league championship.

Gabrielino High Speech and Debate Program Celebrates 3 Academic All-Americans

Three speech and debate students at San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School have received national acclaim as Academic All-Americans, a designation given by the National Speech and Debate Association for excellence in academics and at speech and debate tournaments. Seniors Andrew Do, Kenny Le and Jaycob Wahinehookae received the recognition this year, joining nearly 100 Gabrielino Academic All-Americans throughout the program’s 25-year history.

Gabrielino High Expo Showcases Visual, Performing Arts Programs

San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School showcased student talent and award-winning visual and performing arts (VAPA) courses during the VAPA Expo, held during the school’s open house on March 28. Amid papier-mâché art installations, ceramic masks and paintings resembling stained glass windows, Gabrielino’s choirs performed songs from “Chicago,” while the string orchestra performed hits like “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and concert band jammed to “Isn’t She Lovely.”

San Gabriel Middle School Career Day Highlights Professional Pathways

Jefferson Middle School students learned about the benefits of working in music composition, aerospace engineering, public safety and more than 40 other professional pathways during the school’s annual Career Day on March 29.

Gabrielino High ‘Future Business Leaders’ Advance to State Conference

San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School will send 38 of its Future Business Leaders of America students to the State Leadership Conference, to be held Thursday, April 25 to Sunday, April 28 in Sacramento. All students will explore leadership, college and career workshops, and 17 students will also compete in career-related events.

San Gabriel Unified Music Programs Receive National Recognition

San Gabriel Unified’s efforts to provide high-quality arts and music instruction at all educational levels have been recognized with a Best Communities for Music Education designation, an award given to just 18 school districts in the state and 623 districts nationwide. The designation is given by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation to school districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students.

San Gabriel Unified Elementary Celebrates Cultural Diversity, Inclusivity

Coolidge Elementary School celebrated diversity and inclusivity during International/Indigenous Week from March 11-15. Students enjoyed presentations about a variety of cultures from parents, staff, community members and native experts; represented their own heritage during a dress-up parade; and practiced artwork and staged musical performances highlighting various holidays. Highlighted cultures included Lebanese, Filipino, Ghanaian, Gujarati, Burmese, Tongva, Sikangu Lakota, Dutch, Chinese, Mayan, Jewish and Irish. Photos are available.
