  • Inglewood Unified Announces Availability of Long-Term Lease of Surplus Property

    Dr. Erika Torres, County Administrator of Inglewood Unified School District, is pleased to announce the availability for long-term lease of part or all of 22.6 acres surplused by the School District in the City of Inglewood. This major development site, surplus to the District’s educational needs, is situated on West 104th Street between South Prairie Avenue and Crenshaw Blvd. The site is located two blocks from the Hollywood Park Entertainment District and the new LA/SoFi Stadium due to open later this year. The Inglewood Unified School District has released a Request for Developer Qualifications to partner with a developer to jointly develop this site.

  • LA Chargers Surprise 100 Inglewood Unified Elementary Students with New Bikes and Helmets

    More than 100 second- and third-graders from Bennett-Kew Elementary were surprised with new bikes by LA Chargers players and cheerleaders on Dec. 10. Five winners of an essay competition were honored and presented with bikes as expected, but the surprise came when all students in the contest received neon-colored bikes, helmets and locks.

  • Inglewood Unified Receives First $10 Million Installment of $30 Million in School Improvement Funds from Los Angeles World Airports

    Inglewood Unified on Nov. 14 received the first $10 million installment from the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) to mitigate the impact of airplane noise on students, part of a $44 million program launched in 2015 to improve schools along Los Angeles International Airport flight paths. In October, the Board of Airport Commissioners approved a total of $30 million to sound insulate three schools by early 2021. The money will reimburse the District for improvements underway at Woodworth-Monroe TK-8 Magnet Academy and Oak Street Elementary School in addition to upcoming projects at Morningside High School.

Woodworth-Monroe Football Team Receives New Jerseys, Gear from LA Rams

Football players at Inglewood Unified’s Woodworth-Monroe K-8 Academy received new jerseys, shorts, cleats and sunglasses from the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 13 through a partnership between Inglewood Unified, the City of Inglewood and the Rams. Inglewood Mayor James Butts and the Rams mascot visited the school campus for a celebration of community and partnership.

Inglewood Unified Introduces Leaders for Human Resources, Academics

Inglewood Unified introduced new cabinet members Hedieh Khajavi, chief human resources officer, and Dr. Bernadette C. Lucas, chief academic officer, at its Nov. 6 Board of Trustees meeting. Khajavi brings 18 years of experience in K-12 human resources. Lucas brings more than 28 years of experience in education and most recently served as the director of technology for Beverly Hills Unified.

Inglewood Unified Scholar Selected as Stellar Student of Month

City Honors International Prep High School senior Lydia Mabamije has been selected as November’s Inglewood Unified School District Stellar Student. Mabamije has earned a 4.0 GPA, founded a French club at her school and leads the woodwind section of the Inglewood High School band. Each month, IUSD staff nominate an exceptional student who is thriving in the classroom and beyond.

LA Rams Renovate Inglewood Unified Football Field, Donate to School

The Los Angeles Rams have worked to improve Inglewood Unified’s Morningside High School football field while donating $2,000 to the school along with $1,000 in Gatorade products to the football team. The donations came as the Rams honored Morningside coach Rod Harvey as their High School Coach of the Week. The Rams have partnered with Inglewood Unified to provide students with tools to succeed.

LA Chargers Cornerback Mike Davis Encourages Inglewood Students

Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Mike Davis sent a 30-second audio message to Inglewood students encouraging them to maintain strong attendance. The District has launched an attendance campaign this year with a goal of each student missing no more than seven days in 2019-20. Davis challenged the District’s students to stick to the plan to achieve their goals in the classroom.

Inglewood Unified Students Showcase Projects during STEAM Day

Students at Inglewood Unified’s Payne P-8 STEAM Academy presented projects showcasing the results of their exploration of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics during the school’s STEAM Day on Oct. 4. Parents and community members were invited to experience the projects, which included a pop-a-shot machine, foosball table, maze and other fun activities. 

Inglewood Unified to Host I-Ready Parent Workshop

Inglewood Unified will showcase its I-Ready curriculum – an interactive online learning environment – and show parents how to improve their children’s achievement from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the District office, 401 S. Inglewood Ave., Inglewood. I-Ready is designed to tailor instruction based on each student’s unique needs.

Inglewood Unified to Host LA Philharmonic Concert

The Los Angeles Philharmonic will offer a free orchestra, chamber music and jazz concert beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at Morningside High School’s Lo Hyman Auditorium, 10500 S. Yukon Ave., Inglewood. The concert will feature the LA Phil, led by Associate Conductor Paolo Bortolameolli, performing works by Richard Wagner, Duke Ellington, Aldemaro Romero, and Leonard Bernstein, plus LA Phil-commissioned works by Gabriela Ortiz and Paul Desenne.

Inglewood Unified to Host Wellness Meetings for Families

Inglewood Unified is hosting the last in a series of two-hour parent educational workshops to build healthier schools and homes at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Oak Street Elementary, 633 S Oak St., Inglewood.
