POMONA – The Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization will hold a public hearing on the Pomona Unified School District’s proposal to establish trustee areas and trustee area voting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 18 in the District Board Room, 800 S. Garey Ave.

The County Committee will consider public input, as well as a five-trustee voting map the PUSD Board of Education is recommending for use, as it considers the District’s proposed shift from an at-large voting system of electing school board members to a trustee-area model.

In April, the County Committee is expected to determine the final number of board member seats and provide final approval of the proposed trustee map, which would then be delivered to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk in May.

Pomona Unified could hold its first trustee-area election concurrent with the November 2015 election.

The County Committee’s public hearing follows the District’s five public hearings and a student meeting in February. More than 200 community members participated.

The District has submitted a request for a waiver to the California Department of Education so that it may skip a special election and instead hold new trustee-area elections concurrent with the November election. Some trustee area seats will likely come up for vote at that time and the remaining seats in November 2017.

Language translation services and American Sign Language interpreters will be provided at the County Committee’s public hearing with a minimum notice of three business days prior to the public hearing.
