WHAT: Join Bassett Unified School District in celebrating Don Julian Elementary School’s designation as a California Gold Ribbon School in a flag-raising ceremony. Don Julian was recognized for promoting a college-going culture over the past five years through the No Excuses University program.

The ceremony will include Bassett Unified administrators and officials raising a Gold Ribbon School flag, comments from La Puente city officials and District administrators and faculty, accompanied by a performance by the Torch Middle School concert band.

WHEN: 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 25

WHERE: Don Julian Elementary School, 13855 Don Julian Road, La Puente, CA 91746

DETAILS: Don Julian inspires students to pursue a post-secondary education, with students beginning to think and learn about different colleges in kindergarten. Each classroom adopts a university and students wear their college T-shirts every Friday. Teachers discuss different programs, majors and famous alumni from their assigned universities to pique students’ interest in possible higher education institutions.

The Gold Ribbon is California’s highest academic honor, created in 2014-15 as a substitute to the Distinguished School Program to honor schools for model programs during the rollout of the new California Standards.
