Margaret Heath Elementary School students honored their school’s namesake by bringing bouquets of flowers and bags of pennies to campus to celebrate Margaret Heath Day in a special ceremony on Oct. 5. Continuing a tradition that began in 1951, Margaret Heath Elementary students presented pennies – donations from their families and neighbors – to help fund a scholarship named in Heath’s honor.
Baldwin Park Unified’s Kenmore Elementary School is being recognized as a silver medal winner in the 2018 America’s Best Urban Schools competition for its success in serving students from ethnic minority populations and low socio-economic households. To receive the honor, all student demographic groups, including English language learners, at the highly diverse campus had to score above state averages on California’s English language arts and math standardized tests. In all, 18 schools were selected as finalists in the competition; of those, 15 received medals – four gold, six silver and five bronze. Just four California schools were chosen as medal winners.
Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education will host its annual Senior Citizens’ Health and Safety Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 22 at the Esther Snyder Community Center, 4100 Baldwin Park Blvd., Baldwin Park. The event will feature free flu shot, health screenings, health resource information and more.
Baldwin Park Unified School District partnered with Bike San Gabriel Valley and the City of Baldwin Park to teach eighth-graders at Holland Middle and Jones Junior High schools about the importance of bike safety. Through bike safety classes held Sept. 24-25 and Sept. 26-27, students learned about traffic rules and the benefits of using active transportation, such as being physically active and reducing pollution.
Baldwin Park Unified School District is promoting a year-long attendance campaign for the 2018-19 school year to combat chronic absenteeism, starting with September Attendance Awareness Month. With the slogan “Attendance Matters – Every School Day Counts,” the District emphasizes that good attendance is essential for student achievement and graduation.
Baldwin Park Unified School District is recognizing Sept. 9 through Sunday, Sept. 15 as Suicide Prevention Week and will join the nation in marking September as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in an effort to erase the stigma associated with mental health. Students and teachers from Baldwin Park, North Park Continuation and Sierra Vista high schools’ National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) clubs are hosting events throughout the month to teach the warning signs and risk of suicide and to share stress-relieving and conflict-reducing activities.
Baldwin Park Unified students and family members attended the District’s 12th annual College Fair on Sept. 29, exploring a variety of higher education options, including four-year universities, private colleges, community colleges, technical schools and U.S. service branches. Workshops provided information on financial aid, scholarships, how to write a college essay and how to select a major.
Baldwin Park Unified has officially designated September as School Attendance Awareness month, in an ongoing effort to dedicate its resources to reducing chronic absenteeism rates. Schools across the District will participate in raising awareness of the importance of student attendance through rallies, raffles and friendly competitions starting Tuesday, Sept. 4.
Students from Baldwin Park Unified’s Charles Bursch Elementary School sifted through hundreds of backpacks to find the perfect one on Aug. 13 during Kaiser Permanente’s ninth annual Backpack and School Supply Donation Campaign. Kaiser Permanente’s Baldwin Park Medical Center provided select students at Bursch Elementary, Holland Middle School and Baldwin Park High School with more than 375 backpacks filled with grade-specific school supplies.
Baldwin Park Unified School District launched an Instagram account on Aug. 16, expanding its electronic outreach and communication with students and the community. The page provides up-to-date news about academic offerings, including the Dual Language program, science, technology, engineering and math opportunities, and career technical education courses.
