Santa Monica-Malibu Re-opens 8 Buildings After Tests Clear EPA-Benchmarks

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District recently re-opened its sixth building on the Malibu High School campus, where nine buildings have been identified by the District for air and surface wipe sampling, as well as soil testing, after parents raised concerns about PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) exposure. In total, the District has re-opened eight buildings, which includes an administration and classroom building at Juan Cabrillo Elementary School. The District’s environmental consultant has worked closely with state and federal agencies, developing and implementing a testing plan that relied on benchmarks established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Toxic Substances Control to ensure the safety of all teachers, staff and students at the school sites.
