San Ysidro Schools Upgrade Technology with Samsung TV Donations

San Ysidro School District received 10 new televisions donated by Samsung, allowing teachers to better integrate technology into classroom instruction. La Mirada and Willow Elementary schools will each receive three TVs, while San Ysidro Middle School will receive four. The installations are expected to be completed this month. To qualify for the donation, schools submitted competitive grant applications and demonstrate their need and intentions for the televisions. The donation is part of an agreement between Samsung International Inc. and South County Economic Development Council that aims to offer students more access to cutting-edge educational tools. San Ysidro School District to Switch to Digital Flier System

San Ysidro School District is transitioning to an online distribution and management system for District and school fliers. By using the PeachJar system, the District hopes to reduce printing costs and improve school-to-parent communication. PeachJar emails fliers directly to parents and posts them on school websites, making the information more accessible. As the District makes the transition, it will continue to provide print fliers at schools and posted on bulletin boards to ensure all families stay informed. Athlete Featured in ‘McFarland USA’ to Speak at Willow School Movie Night

Thomas Valles, a member of the 1987 state-champion McFarland High cross-country track team featured in Disney’s “McFarland USA,” will speak to students at Willow Elementary School’s Movie Night on Friday, March 3 about his experiences. Today, Valles coaches the McFarland Track Club in addition to working as a correctional officer at Kern Valley State Prison. The 2015 movie, which will be the evening’s featured film at 6:30 p.m., depicts the struggles and triumph of an all-Latino boys’ cross-country team from a small farming community in Kern County. Follow-up Story: The San Ysidro School District Preschool and Child Development Center celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America with a day of reading on March 3. The San Ysidro Women’s Club joined other community members, District employees and teachers to reach their favorite children’s books to preschoolers. San Ysidro Parents Learn Nutrition, Wellness Tips in Weekly Workshops

San Ysidro parents are learning nutrition and exercise tips during a month of workshops through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Program. San Ysidro Preschool and Child Development programs are hosting weekly classes to help families with limited resources adopt healthy habits. Classes include demonstrations and cooking lessons, and cover how to plan nutritious, budget-friendly meals and find fun ways to boost activity. San Ysidro School District Offers Students Unique Career Day Opportunity

Follow-up Story: Celebrity chefs, flash mobs and students dressed as doctors, nurses, engineers and athletes highlighted Ocean View Hills School’s inaugural College and Career Readiness Day, held Jan. 26. Over 170 OVHS eighth-grade students listened to community leaders, including Superintendent Dr. Julia Fonseca and San Diego chef Jeff Rossman, who demonstrated how to prepare fresh salsa. As OVHS Principal Nadia Aviles was addressing the students, 35 members of the Ocean View Hills leadership team stood up and formed a flash mob, dancing and singing as the audience clapped and cheered them on. San Ysidro School District Spends a Morning with Emmy Winner C.S. Keys

San Ysidro School District will provide about 15 District families with toys, clothing and other necessities from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17 during a special holiday breakfast with radio/TV personality C.S. Keys at The Tilted Kilt at Westfield Mission Valley, 1640 Camino Del Rio N., San Diego. Families in attendance will receive blankets collected during the annual Project Dream blanket drive. San Ysidro School District Students Receive Free Shoes for the Holidays

Follow-up Story: One hundred fifty San Ysidro School District students kicked off their holiday season with brand new footwear courtesy of the Union-Tribune Shoe Fund. Twenty to 25 students from each of the seven District schools filled the aisles of Payless ShoeSource at the Las Americas Premium Outlets to pick new school shoes during a two-hour private shopping event on Dec. 2. The donation by the Union-Tribune Shoe Fund, which operates solely on contributions from San Diego County residents, helps the District maintain its commitment to support all students, especially those in need. San Ysidro School District Holds Annual Blanket Drive for Students in Need

San Ysidro School District is seeking 1,500 adult-size blankets for children and families in need during its Project Dream blanket drive. Donations will be accepted through Thursday, Dec. 15 at the District Office, 4350 Otay Mesa Road, San Ysidro. The District will distribute the blankets at upcoming holiday events. The first distribution will be at Breakfast with CS Keys on Dec. 17 at the Tilted Kilt in Mission Valley, where SYSD is aiming to feed up to 75 kids and 25 adults. The second distribution will take place at the Kearny Mesa Bowl with Athletes for Education on Dec. 20. San Ysidro School District Hosts Free Food Pantry for Hundreds of Families

Follow-up Story: San Ysidro School District’s Willow School filled over 300 bags of food and distributed 225 turkeys to Willow School families and local community members during the school’s bi-monthly food pantry. Hundreds of community members filled the school courtyard at the Mercado Willow Market as families stocked their grocery bags with up to 25 pounds of produce provided by Feeding America, as well as turkeys donated by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez as part of Operation Gobble 2016.
