Los Nietos Middle School Students Run 18 Miles to Prepare for Marathon

Follow-up Story: Twenty-four Los Nietos Middle School students completed the L.A. Marathon on March 19, crossing the finish line to earn medals. The students prepared all year through Students Run L.A., a program designed to improve student health, promote goal-setting and facilitate character-building. Los Nietos Students Run L.A. Coach Erika Rose, with the help of three coaches and two adult volunteers, guided students through a long, rigorous training schedule that included distance runs. Los Nietos Hosts Educators from China for Exchange of Practices

Follow-up Story: Los Nietos School District hosted nearly 25 educators from China for a lunch, school tour and exchange of educational practices on Jan. 23 as part of an international partnership. The educators visited Aeolian Elementary School, where they toured the campus and experienced classroom instruction. The District’s new curriculum, technology, and Safe and Civil Schools behavioral practices were on display. The group concluded the visit at the Los Nietos District Office, where they met with Superintendent Jonathan Vasquez and staff members for a debriefing. Los Nietos Elementary School Introduces Students to STEAM Careers

Follow-up Story: Nearly 125 Rancho Santa Gertrudes Elementary School students took part in the opening day of a four-Saturday science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) Enrichment Program that kicked off on Jan. 28. The program allows students in second grade and above to explore exciting fields like robotics, computer coding, journalism, computer skills and art. The program is designed to help students excel beyond their daily curriculum while finding new passions and interests that can lead them down a path of success. Follow-up Story: Los Nietos School District will host nearly 20 educators from Chengdu, the capital of China’s Sichuan province, for lunch, a school tour and exchange of educational practices on Monday, Jan. 23 as part of an international partnership. The District’s new curriculum, technology and Safe and Civil Schools behavioral practices will be on display. Also, two Chinese teachers will teach a lesson to fourth-grade students at Aeolian Elementary School. Librarians Partner with Los Nietos School to Boost Reading Skills

Santa Fe Springs City librarians are bringing extra reading help to third-graders at Los Nietos School District’s Rancho Santa Gertrudes Elementary twice a week through a reading club designed to boost literacy comprehension. Through a partnership with the District, librarians will spend an hour on Wednesdays and Thursdays helping small groups of students raise reading levels. Los Nietos Middle School to Hold Color Run Fundraiser

Los Nietos Middle School will send its students into Winter Break colorfully by holding a color run fundraiser race on Thursday, Dec. 22 on the school’s campus, 11425 E. Rivera Road, Los Nietos. All students may participate in the run. Cost is $5 to run, $10 if students wish to receive a T-shirt. LNMS students have been whipping up colored powder and setting up the course for weeks in preparation of the event. All proceeds will go to the school’s Associated Student Body. Los Nietos to Hold Canned Food and Toy Giveaway for Needy Families

Los Nietos School District will hold its annual canned food and toy giveaway at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17 at the Los Nietos District Office, 8324 Westman Ave., Whittier. Through a partnership with the South East Los Angeles County Foundation (SELAC), roughly 125 families have been selected and invited to the District Office where they will receive canned groceries as well as bread and meat items. Additionally, toys will be distributed to families for the holiday season. At the end of the three-hour food distribution, the remainder of the food will be donated to a local church. Los Nietos Students Pursue Love of Science in Olympiad Club

A select group of fifth- and sixth-graders at Rancho Santa Gertrudes Elementary School are pursuing their love of science through Science Olympiad Club. The group meets weekly to produce experiments and prepare for the annual Los Angeles County Elementary Science Olympiad on Saturday, March 4, 2017, when 60 teams will compete through a variety of experiments. Los Nietos Elementary Students Partner with Library, Learn Literary Analysis

Rancho Santa Gertrudes Elementary School students in first through third grades are developing critical skills in literary analysis through a partnership with Santa Fe Springs City Library, which opens its doors once a month for an exclusive visit with the children’s librarian. The librarian reads to them and leads discussions on themes being taught in their classrooms. Students are learning how concepts like “character” and “point of view” are implemented to tell a story.
