Fontana Unified Student Selected to Tournament of Roses Honor Band

Follow-up Story: Kaiser High School student Jeremy Chan has been selected from hundreds of percussionists from across Southern California to perform in Pasadena City College’s Tournament of Roses Honor Band. Fontana Unified to Host Free College Readiness Workshop for Parents

Fontana Unified School District will hold a free Parent University workshop from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, highlighting education pathways and tips to promote college and career readiness. The workshops will be at the John D. Piazza Educational Center, 9680 Citrus Ave., Fontana. Childcare for children ages 3 to 11 will be available, as well as translation services. Fontana Unified Celebrates 230 AP Scholar Award 2017 Recipients

Follow-up Story: A total of 230 Fontana Unified School District students earned Advanced Placement Scholar awards, which recognize college-level achievement through AP courses and exams taken in 2016-17. Amandeep Heyer, Vanessa Escartin Uribe, Alejandra Ramirez and Adrian Reynoso received the National AP Scholar Award – the highest distinction offered by the College Board – by earning an average score of four or higher on a five-point scale on all AP exams taken, and scores of four or higher on eight or more of the exams. Fontana Unified School District to Host Family Science Night

Fontana Unified will host a Family Science Night from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11 at Juniper Elementary School, at 7655 Juniper Ave., Fontana. The free event is open to all District families, but parents must accompany their children as they explore the fun side of science through experiments and engaging lessons. Fontana Unified Students Display Steady Performance on State Tests

Fontana Unified students maintained steady performance on California English language arts (ELA) and math tests in 2017, matching or topping 2016 scores as the District implemented new core curriculum. English learners who have been reclassified as Fluent English Proficient (RFEP) also maintained their progress in 2017, and a higher percentage of RFEP students met or exceeded ELA standards than the percentage statewide. Fontana Unified Middle Schools Explore STEM at Student Conference

Follow-up Story: Fontana Unified middle school students discovered the practical uses of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at the annual STEMapalooza student conference on Sept. 15 at the Way World Outreach in San Bernardino. Students explored interactive exhibits from Air Quality Management District, Auto Club Speedway, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in San Bernardino and RoboKong. Dolores Huerta International Academy Celebrates Día de Los Muertos

Follow-up Story: Dolores Huerta International Academy second-grader Christian Velasco never met his great-uncle Frank “Paco” Avedaño, but said he feels like he knows him after learning about his life and constructing a Día de Los Muertos altar in his honor. Dolores Huerta International Academy on Nov. 9 showcased more than 400 student-made altars that featured photos, keepsakes and favorite foods of their family members. Fontana Unified to Host 18th Annual Black College and University Fair

Fontana Unified is partnering with Rialto Unified School District to host its 18th annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Fair from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 at A.B. Miller High School, 6821 Oleander Ave., Fontana. Seniors from both districts can speak to recruiters from at least 30 HBCUs, receive application fee waivers, and receive “on the spot” admissions and scholarships from selected colleges if qualified. Fontana Unified Partners with County Library to Host Annual College Fair

Fontana Unified School District will host its annual college fair from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the Lewis Library and Technology Center, 8437 Sierra Ave., Fontana.
