250 Students Graduate at Bassett High Ceremony

Follow-up Story: Bassett High School celebrated the commencement of 250 graduating seniors from the Class of 2016 on June 1, including students who will pursue the next stage of their college and career journeys at prestigious universities and regional trade and technical schools. Bassett Unified Middle Schoolers to Learn about Career Possibilities

Bassett Unified middle schoolers will unlock a new world of career possibilities when the La Puente Valley Regional Occupational Program begins at Bassett High School on Monday, June 13. The three-and-a-half-week course will offer curriculum that explores medical and digital media fields while helping students explore professional options through hands-on experiences that develop personal and technical skills. Bassett Unified Student Boosts Confidence through Karate Program, Wins Tournament

Torch Middle School seventh-grader Max Castañon began taking part in an after-school karate program to build self-confidence – and found himself not only connecting better with classmates, but also winning a major tournament. Castañon won first place for his martial arts technique at the West Coast Nationals Karate Tournament on May 14. Bassett Unified Workshops Boost Strong Family Relationships

Bassett Unified Elementary to host Flag-Raising Ceremony to Celebrate Gold Ribbon School Award

Join Bassett Unified School District in celebrating Don Julian Elementary School’s designation as a California Gold Ribbon School in a flag-raising ceremony at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 25. Don Julian was recognized for promoting a college-going culture over the past five years through the No Excuses University program. The ceremony will include Bassett Unified administrators and officials raising a Gold Ribbon School flag, comments from La Puente city officials and District administrators and faculty, accompanied by a performance by the Torch Middle School concert band. Bassett High to Honor Scholarship Seniors during Awards Breakfast

Bassett High School will hold an awards ceremony during its annual Senior Breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 21 to honor seniors who have earned scholarships. The event will be held at Cal Poly Pomona’s Kellogg West, 3801 W. Temple Ave., Pomona. Each senior will receive a certificate of recognition and announce the college they will attend. Bassett Unified Students Discover Anatomy of Mammal Heart through Dissection Project

Follow-up Story: Gripping pig hearts as large as their heads, nearly 30 students from third to eighth grade in groups of four excitedly snipped and peeled back a flap of the heart to expose an inner chamber of muscle fibers and tissue – one of many educational hands-on activities provided through Edgewood Academy’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program. Maria Torres, a science instructor from the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, described the parts and functions of a mammal’s heart and cautioned the students on how to properly dissect the pig heart.  GATE-coordinator and fifth-grade teacher Julie Chen collaborated with the Discovery Science Center to bring the science project and materials to Edgewood.   Media Contact: Nancy Yeang, 909-445-1001 (office) or 909-331-6646 (cell)Read More Photos

Bassett Unified’s Don Julian School Named Academic Achieving School

Bassett Unified's Don Julian Elementary School was named a Title I Academic Achieving School on May 3 by the California Department of Education for meeting the educational needs of students living at or below poverty level. Don Julian recently received a Gold Ribbon School recognition from the state in April for its model academic program, No Excuses University, in which educators have inspired students to pursue higher education for the past five years. Bassett Unified to host District Elementary School Olympics

More than 60 kindergarteners through fifth-graders will compete Tuesday, May 3 for gold medals in track and field events during Bassett Unified’s Elementary Olympics. Events include a 100-meter race, 400-meter race, 100-meter relay and softball throw. The first race starts at 3:30 p.m. at Bassett High School Stadium, 755 Ardilla Ave., La Puente.
