WHAT: Whittier Union’s five high schools will stage a seasonal music celebration during the annual Choral Festival with a selection of classical, jazz and Christmas favorites.

Choral groups from California, La Serna, Pioneer, Santa Fe and Whittier high schools will commemorate the holiday season and receive evaluation from this year’s adjudicator, Bruce Rogers, an elite vocal instructor and director of choral activities at Mt. San Antonio College.

Rogers – who oversees such award-winning performance groups as the Chamber Singers and vocal jazz ensemble Singcopation – has achieved international success. Choirs under his direction have achieved top ranking in competitions throughout the world, including performances in concert halls in the United States, England, Poland, Italy and France.

WHEN: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5

WHERE: Whittier College Memorial Chapel, 13406 Philadelphia St., Whittier

DETAILS: The annual concert is a rare opportunity for the choirs and their directors to listen and learn from each other as well as from a well-respected adjudicator. Rogers was the first choral director in United States to lead choir groups at two separate global competitions – the Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) National Convention and the Jazz Education Network (JEN) Conference. In 2014, he received the California Music Educators Association’s Outstanding Music Educator’s Award. Each of the District’s comprehensive high schools offers beginning, intermediate and advanced choral and instrumental music programs and theater arts courses. The choral ensembles have performed in local, regional and national competitions in famous locations such as Carnegie Hall and the Disney Concert Hall.
