WHAT: Plymouth Elementary School’s PTA will celebrate the Lunar New Year during Chinese New Year Family Night, an evening of activities and performances by students who have been hard at work learning cultural dances and songs, as well as crafting props and masks.

WHEN: Friday, Feb. 8, 6 to 8 p.m., Performances: 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

WHERE: Plymouth Elementary School, 1300 Boley St., Monrovia

DETAILS: The evening will kick off with students from Plymouth’s after-school Village program providing information on Chinese New Year traditions and performing a dance entitled “Gong Xi.” Students enrolled in the Mandarin Dual Immersion TK-K classes will perform the songs “Happy Child Loves to Sing,” and “Song of 12 Zodiacs.” There will be additional performances from two of Plymouth’s English-only classes and second-and third-grade Dual Immersion students.

In addition, students and families can make lanterns, a fire-breathing dragon, and a calendar at craft stations.

Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in Chinese culture and is significant to Plymouth’s Dual Immersion curriculum – bringing traditional colors, tastes, and sounds to students and families. Experiencing Chinese culture enhances students’ learning of the Chinese language. Students will use verbal and written skills to learn songs and make props.
