Paramount, CA –Paramount Unified School District has been chosen as one of 10 Los Angeles County 2018 model school districts by the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) for its success in lowering rates in chronic absenteeism and truancy.

Paramount Unified will present information about the District’s best attendance practices and processes to other districts during a SARB Symposium on May 20 at the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

The Model SARB recognition program recognizes multi-tiered school attendance improvement programs at the district and county level. Paramount Unified posted an overall absenteeism rate of 8.1 percent, below the state average of 11 percent, for the 2017-18 school year.

“Our dedication to making sure our students and families are continually supported in a strong learning environment is making a difference in our attendance,” said Daniel Sepulveda, teacher on special assignment for student services. “A child’s access to the resources needed for success amount to nothing if he or she is not attending school regularly.”

At Paramount Unified, schools monitor attendance throughout the school year and submit a SARB referral to the Office of Student Services when a student’s attendance indicates he or she is chronically absent. Through SARB, parents and students receive information on the importance of complying with California law.

Additionally, parents and students are given the opportunity to share the reasons behind truancies and are offered advice and resources to improve the student’s attendance.

“It is an honor for Paramount Unified to be recognized for our efforts in reducing chronic absenteeism,” Superintendent Dr. Ruth Pérez said. “We are dedicated to giving our students the best possible education through innovative programs and an excellent teaching staff that challenges our students academically.”
