MONROVIA, CA – Monrovia High senior Rebecca De La O proudly signed a symbolic letter of commitment to attend the University of California, Los Angeles during the school’s lunchtime series of college signing celebrations, Sign on the Line, from April to May.

De La O will study mathematics of computation, a major she discovered that blends her interests in computer science and gaming when she became a member of Monrovia High’s Math and Science Academy (MASA) to explore how she can become a video game programmer.

“I love the problem-solving aspect of writing code. Making any kind of change in the game requires going back and rewriting lines and lines of code,” De La O said. “It can take hours but, in the end, you feel this great sense of accomplishment when you finally figure it out.”

The ambitious student completed 13 AP courses over her four years at Monrovia High, competed in the school’s cross country and track teams, and was recognized by the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program by scoring among the top 2.5 percent of the Hispanic/Latino population across the states in the PSATs. She also boasts a 4.6 GPA and is the Class of 2018’s salutatorian.

“Monrovia High has given me so many opportunities to learn and advance my knowledge,” De La O said. “In my sophomore year, everything seemed to click and I knew that I wanted to do more than just get good grades, I wanted to establish a legacy.”

Sign on the Line is an annual end-of-the-year celebration organized by Monrovia High’s Renaissance Club in which seniors officially declare the college, university, or military branch they will attend. This year, 123 Monrovia High seniors participated.

“Congratulations to our graduating seniors who have worked so hard to achieve their dreams and who will now pursue the next step of their educational careers,” Monrovia Board President Terrence Williams said. “I wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.”

Renaissance, now in place at every Monrovia Unified school, is a student leadership team that recognizes peers for educational achievements, attendance, behavior, citizenship, and personal endeavors.

“I am so proud of our Class of 2018 graduates who all worked so hard to achieve their personal and academic goals,” Monrovia High Principal Kirk McGinnis said. “Sign on the Line gives us the opportunity to celebrate our students who will move on to the next stage of their educational goals.”

Monrovia High Class of 2018 graduates will attend prestigious universities across the nation, including UC Berkeley, CSU Los Angeles, Arizona State, Kansas State, and Azusa Pacific.

“Rebecca and her classmates have learned that, with energy and passion, it is possible to accomplish your goals,” Monrovia Superintendent Dr. Katherine Thorossian said. “We are so fortunate to have exemplary educators who inspire our students to pursue their dreams.”
