Phase 1B Projects Will Continue Through Summer Months

Lynwood, Calif. As Lynwood Unified continues making extensive progress in beautifying several school campuses utilizing a $93 million Measure K facilities bond, the District is gearing up to kick off the second phase of essential repairs at nearly a dozen school sites that will include exterior painting, new roofing and asphalt repairs, the installation of an HVAC system and facility improvements at the Pathway Independent Studies building.

The District is nearing completion of $2 million worth of projects under Phase 1B, part of the first group of construction projects funded under the voter-approved bond that began last June and will continue this summer.

At the same time, LUSD will commence Phase 2 of its Measure K upgrades, a $7.9 million investment that will improve and enhance 11campuses starting in June.

“The District is forging ahead with these new enhancements and progress is looking great,” said LUSD Board of Education President Briseida Gonzalez. “Our students and parents are already seeing the vital improvements being made to maintain our facilities over the long-term, and we can’t wait to celebrate the completion of these wonderful projects.”

Projects under Phase 2 include exterior painting at Lincoln and Washington elementary schools, Hosler and Lynwood middle schools, and Firebaugh and Lynwood high schools. Abbott and Will Rogers elementary schools, Hosler and Lynwood middle schools, and Lynwood High School will receive re-roofing and re-coating. Lindbergh, Roosevelt and Will Rogers elementary schools will receive asphalt and concrete repairs.

A new HVAC system will be installed at Library Building B at Lynwood Middle School and water mains will be replaced at Abbott, Lincoln, Washington and Roosevelt elementary schools. Mark Twain and Washington elementary schools will also have designated Drop Off Zones.

The Pathway Independent Studies “Yellow Building” will be replaced with a new, pre-manufactured facility with staff and student restrooms and parking modifications. Construction is expected to begin in July. Work on Phase 2 projects will continue through the end of the year.

Phases 1A, 1B and 1C fall under the District’s $10 million Measure K construction plan.

Phase 1A – which featured $6 million in upgrades at 16 campuses, including new exterior paint, gym renovations, roof replacement and asphalt repairs – was completed in summer 2013. Phase 1C – which will feature a new $2 million synthetic field and track for Lynwood High School – is in the final design phase, with construction expected to begin this winter.

Projects completed under Phase 1B in the last few months include new asphalt and slurry at Lindbergh and Will Rogers elementary schools, as well as restriping of all asphalt and installation of proper drainage. Completed work also includes new roofing projects at six schools to prevent leaks and maintain facilities.

The remaining projects under Phase 1B, including the installation of chain-link fencing to separate property lines at some schools, will continue through summer.

In addition, LUSD will perform gym improvements at Hosler and Lynwood middle schools, which will both receive new paint, scoreboards and basketball backboards, bleacher repairs and have their existing floors refinished. Work is anticipated to start in June and be completedby September.

“Since Lynwood voters approved this Measure K funding in 2012, we have been able to perform improvements at our facilities to address basic needs and enhance the safety and comfort of our students as they continue their education,” LUSD Superintendent Paul Gothold said. “Through the next phases of construction projects, we will continue to work diligently in operating efficiently and meeting the needs of our entire school community.”

Outside of those projects, LUSD is currently completing construction at Washington and Lincoln elementary schools, which included the removal of dozens of outdated portable classrooms that have been replaced with new state-of-the-art, energy efficient classroom facilities.

The two long-awaited classroom facilities projects total $26 million, half of which is funded under Measure K. The remaining balance is being paid for through state matching funds.

The projects, which include new parking lots and play areas, are slated for completion by July and August for Lincoln and Washington, respectively.
