Paramount, CA – More than 100 seventh-grade students from Hollydale K-8 School toured University of California Irvine on Feb. 13, learning about college culture through visits to the bookstore and a discussion with students about admission, housing and costs.

“Hollydale sets high academic expectations for all students,” Hollydale teacher Rosa Edwards said. “We plan these field trips as a way to help our students understand the process of going to college.”

At Hollydale, administrators and teachers stress the importance of college through daily activities and weekly college announcements. Each week, counselors read a college fact through the school intercom, which includes information on cost and requirements for college, and the difference between community college and four-year universities.

Additionally, students may take Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) as an elective in fifth, seventh and eighth grades and receive academic counseling about UC and CSU admission requirements.

“Paramount Unified is committed to beginning the steps to college early on in the lives of our students,” Superintendent Ruth Pérez said. “These field trips ensure our students are staying focused on college, and are prepared as they make the transition to high school and beyond.”
