FONTANA, CA – Henry J. Kaiser High School senior Jashandeep Lobana – an accomplished tri-sport athlete, AP scholar and avid volunteer – has been recognized as a 2019 Gates Scholar, one of two in Fontana Unified and among 300 students in the nation to be honored.

Lobana’s academic feats have already secured him a $40,000 Edison International scholarship and admission to Johns Hopkins University, where he plans to study neuroscience before attending medical school and pursuing a career in neurosurgery.

“It’s been really humbling to receive these scholarships and to not have to worry about how I’m going to pay for college,” Lobana said. “I couldn’t have done this without the support from my family, my teachers and everyone in Fontana Unified. I also want to thank my principal, Mr. Abernathy, for all the encouragement he has given me to help me achieve my goals.”

Lobana, who came to Fontana as an English Learner at age 3, has maintained a 4.8 GPA while volunteering through campus clubs and serving as Fontana Unified’s Board of Education student member and youth advisory council member.

First awarded in 2018, the all-expense-paid Gates Scholarship will be given to 3,000 minority seniors over the next decade, funding the full cost of college not already covered by other financial aid and the expected family contribution determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

To be eligible, students must be Pell Grant-eligible, maintain at least a cumulative weighted 3.3 or better GPA, enroll in a four-year college or university and demonstrate leadership ability and exceptional personal success skills, such as perseverance and service to community.

“Jash has stunned us with his academic prowess, valuable insight and sincere love for Fontana Unified,” FUSD Superintendent Randal S. Bassett said. “This honor, like the many he has received thus far, is well-deserved, and we look forward to seeing what Jash will continue to accomplish.”
