INGLEWOOD, CA – City Honors International Preparatory High School will partner with Cambridge Assessment International Education to become Inglewood Unified School District’s charter school beginning in August 2019.

A five-year dependent charter petition for City Honors was approved during a Board of Education meeting on June 19.

Cambridge will assist City Honors in implementing college- and career-readiness curriculum, provide assessments and work with the school to implement innovative approaches to education.

“This is an exciting step forward for the District and the Inglewood community, providing more options for students to pursue their higher education and career goals,” State Administrator Dr. Thelma Mélendez de Santa Ana said. “We are building on nearly 20 years of academic excellence at City Honors, which provides a template of success for its students and beyond.”

Unlike independent charter schools, which are created and operated separately from their authorizing school districts, dependent charter schools are created and operated by their districts. Like other charter schools, they have more autonomy than regular public schools to develop curriculum to meet the needs of students.

City Honors, a member of the National Honors Society, opened its doors in 2001 and projects to have 450 students for the 2019-20 school year, with a capacity to serve 600 students. City Honors incorporates partnerships from local colleges and other organizations, including:

• El Camino College (dual enrollment);
• UCLA (college prep and leadership);
• Asia Society (global language);
• Southern California Regional Occupational Center (career technical education);
• Project Echo (entrepreneurial studies);
• Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (startup tech);
• Northrop Grumman (technical projects);
• Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (film school, women’s studies);
• Aerospace Corporation (freshman STEM);
• Asomugha Foundation (college tours for students of color); and
• Western Golf Academy (caddie academy).
