WHAT: In advance of the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, San Ysidro School District’s Smythe Elementary will hold its annual commemorative assembly to honor the heroes of that tragic day. Local police officers, firefighters, border patrol, school staff, SYSD board members, Superintendent Julio Fonseca, parents and community members will accompany all 650 students in observance of the anniversary.

WHEN: 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9

WHERE: Smythe Elementary School, 1880 Smythe Ave.,San Ysidro 92173

DETAILS: Student-made signs with the words Unity, Love, Peace and Respect will adorn all classroom doors. During the days leading up to the ceremony, students will learn the meaning of each word in times of hardship and tragedy. Students also will present letters of gratitude to first responders and will sing patriotic songs from their seats while dressed in red, white and blue.
