San Ysidro School District unveiled its new Parent Community Center to more than 150 community members during a Dec. 16 celebration featuring live music from a middle school mariachi band, presentation of colors by an elementary school color guard and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Center will offer parent workshops, English classes, computer and Internet access and additional learning opportunities to parents and community members. Amenities include computer stations equipped with Internet access, collaborative work space areas and a large outdoor deck with tables.

“The Center equips our parents with the tools that are necessary to help their children excel academically,” SYSD Board President Marcos Diaz said. “The Parent Community Center has been a long time coming and is another positive step toward empowering our San Ysidro families.”

Wednesday’s celebration included a performance by the San Ysidro Middle School Mariachi Band. The Willow Elementary School Color Guard presented the colors.

“The District remains committed to ensuring our students have access to 21st century technology as they become global learners,” SYSD Superintendent Dr. Julio Fonseca said. “It is equally important to provide academic support and resources to our parents so that our students are receiving support outside of the classroom to overcome barriers and achieve their dreams.”

The Center is located at the San Ysidro District Office, 4350 Otay Mesa Road, San Ysidro, and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
