SAN YSIDRO – San Ysidro School District will implement new math and English curriculums, add classroom digital tools, expand teacher training and provide visual and performing arts as part of its 2016-19 Local Control and Accountability Plan.

The LCAP guides District efforts to improve student learning. It identifies goals for each year, strategies to achieve those goals and funding sources. With widespread input from District stakeholders, including parents, students, teachers and staff, San Ysidro has crafted many programs targeting all students and others that focus on the state’s three high-needs groups: economically disadvantaged students, foster children and English learners.

The LCAP was adopted on June 23, the same day the Board adopted its 2016-17 budget.

“We have taken all of the valuable input from our parents, students, teachers and community members regarding student success and have developed a plan to address the needs of our students, provide the necessary tools to raise achievement levels, and meet state priorities,” San Ysidro School District Superintendent Dr. Julio Fonseca said.

The District’s implementation of the new math curriculum will be for grades sixth to eighth, while the new English language arts curriculum will be administered in grades K-8. The goal is to assess whether these curriculums will fit the needs of the District’s students and should be made permanent.

One of the new programs the District is rolling out is a three-year technology plan, which will provide students with Chromebooks and iPads to deepen their level of understanding of the course material and increase classroom engagement. Students at Sunset Elementary will be the first to receive the Chromebooks, which will be used as an interactive learning tool during class instruction.

At least seven supplemental programs in reading and writing will also be offered across the District to ensure students can grasp concepts they may have been missed during class.

The launch of Project Lead The Way (PLTW) and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) at San Ysidro Middle School will provide a rigorous course of study to prepare students for high school and college. Electives such as Spanish, and programs such as Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) will also be implemented to provide students effective academic support.

The District will also continue growing its college readiness programs such as the Compact Mentor Program, which pairs seventh-graders with San Diego State University student-mentors who encourage students to stay on track and teach them ways to financially prepare for college, as well as Junior Achievement, which educates students on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness.

Programs and services that will expand or are being implemented to prepare San Ysidro students for high school, college and beyond include:

  • Student incentives designed to increase attendance and achievement
  • Continued implementation of California Standards-aligned math and ELA curriculums
  • Teacher training and professional development
  • English Language Master Plan to be implemented in 2017-18
  • Providing students with a positive and welcoming academic environment
  • After School Education and Safety program expansion across all schools
  • Professional development opportunities for parents via the Parent Community Center
  • Improving home-to-school communication and parent engagement with the assistance of Outreach Consultants
