Nuffer Elementary School kindergarten teacher Denise Daguimol was honored over the summer as Teacher of the Year at the 2016 Norwalk Lions Club Annual Awards Banquet for her dedication in supporting students and fellow teachers.

Daguimol, who was also named Norwalk-La Mirada Unified’s 2016 Teacher of the Year in May, received an engraved apple from the Lions Club and proclamations from U.S. Rep. Linda Sanchez, State Sen. Tony Mendoza and State Assemblyman Ian Calderon.

Daguimol creates positive reinforcement within her classroom by using music and motion. She encourages her students to bring objects from everyday life to enhance their cognitive awareness, and her students can track their progress with learning charts they help create.

“I am always trying to make learning fun,” Daguimol said. “I am incredibly honored to receive this tremendous distinction. Thank you to the Norwalk Lions Club.”

The Lions Club is celebrating 70 years serving the Norwalk community. Members work extensively with Norwalk-La Mirada Unified on numerous projects throughout the year, including:

• An annual Flag Day celebration in February at a Norwalk elementary school
• A Peace Poster contest for Norwalk middle school students
• An America-themed student speaker contest for Norwalk high school students with scholarship money as the prize
• Three $1,000 senior scholarships
• Cerritos College scholarships

“We are grateful to the Norwalk Lions Club for all the great work they are doing for the community,” Norwalk-La Mirada Unified Superintendent Dr. Hasmik Danielian said. “They encourage our students to be creative and positive, values that are shared with the District.”

NLMUSD Board Member Ana Valencia, who also a Lions Club education committee member, presented Daguimol with the Teacher of the Year award.

“Denise is the personification of what a great school teacher should be,” Valencia said. “She is passionate about her role as an educator, is greatly respected by her peers and is a born leader. Thank you to Denise for all she has done to serve the Norwalk community.”
