MONROVIA, CA – Monrovia Unified School District celebrated its 100th day of school with lively classroom and community activities, from having students imagine what they would look like when they turn 100 to kindergarteners playing number games rooted in 100 on Jan. 30.

These events gave the opportunity for schools to showcase their students’ successes and progress while creating excitement over what they’ve learned over the first 100 days of school.

“Congratulations to all of our students for excelling in their academic and personal goals through the first 100 days of school,” Monrovia Unified Board President Terrance Williams said. “Thank you to all of our teachers and staff for making this day exciting for our students and our community.”

Monroe Elementary celebrated the day by hosting a Grandparents and Special Friends Day with students reimagining themselves at 100 years old by dressing up in shawls and sporting gray hair. Students shared color paper images of what they think they would look like when they turned 100 and gave tours around their campus to their grandparents and families.

“I liked seeing everyone all dressed up for the day and it was really fun to bring my aunt with me to school and show her what I do in class,” fourth-grader Presley Jones said. “She wanted to visit and remember what it was like to be in elementary school because it’s been such a long time since she was a kid.”

Kindergarten students at Bradoaks Elementary School painted 100 gumballs and found 100 objects in a picture. Wild Rose Elementary school students participated in numerous activities that involved counting up to 100, stringing 100 pieces of cereal, and bringing collections of 100 items.

Mayflower Elementary School challenged their students to read 100 books and write 100 words in one day. Plymouth students tried to find 100 pigs in their playgrounds, based on the book Pigs in Hiding, and matched the farm animal to a number line. They also held their 100th class meeting, said 100 hellos, and then built a wooden community block structure.

“Monrovia Unified focuses on providing every opportunity for our students to succeed during every step of their educational journey,” Monrovia Unified Superintendent Dr. Katherine Thorossian said. “Our students showed so much excitement about being in school and celebrating the knowledge they’ve received during the first 100 days of school, and I look forward to what they will achieve for the rest of the school year.”
