Lynwood – More than 90 K-12 students received nearly $8,000 in scholarships May 31 at Bateman Hall during Lynwood Unified’s fourth annual District African American Advisory Parent Council (DAAAPC) Scholarship Celebration.

African American students from all 18 Lynwood Unified schools were honored for their hard work and dedication to academics with medals, scholarships ranging from $25 to $600 depending on grade level, and prizes, such as graphic calculators, electronic phonetic spelling devices or drawing Magic Boards.

“This event gives all students an opportunity to be proud of themselves and to know they are special,” DAAAPC President Mary Ransom said. “By identifying and rewarding students who might not always receive this kind of recognition, it motivates them and other students to continue trying their hardest and achieving their best.”

In addition to individual school recognitions, students from Lynwood High, Firebaugh High, Vista High and Pathway Independent Study schools were honored for overcoming hardships and pursuing their post-secondary endeavors. Four elementary students were also awarded medals and certificates for participating in a Saturday Science Academy.

“This is a very empowering event for our students, and I hope they are proud of all their accomplishments,” Lynwood Unified Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite said. “I really want to thank everyone in DAAAPC for consistently making sure all students have opportunities like this to gain recognition and motivation to pursue their dreams.”

DAAAPC consists of about 100 Lynwood Unified parents who strive to boost their children’s academic achievements and prepare them for the modern-day workforce.

“I am excited to see so many of our students achieving at such high levels in order to make successful lives for themselves,” Lynwood Unified Board President Alma-Delia Renteria said. “These banquets show our students how much we care about them and how proud we are to see them flourishing in their academics.”
