Recognition Demonstrates English and Foreign Language Proficiency

Lynwood, Calif. – Thirty-seven Lynwood High School Class of 2014 graduates have earned the California State Seal of Biliteracy this summer, giving them a competitive edge in the global workforce and as they pursue college degrees.

The award comes in the form of gold seals placed on students’ high school diplomas and transcripts, which shows potential employers and college recruiters that they can effectively communicate in English and at least one other language.

“In today’s global economy, it’s more important than ever to ensure that our students have the tools they need to thrive following graduation from our schools,” said LUSD Board of Education President Briseida Gonzalez. “The Seal of Biliteracy is a wonderful way to reward our students for their hard work as they pursue higher education and competitive 21st century careers.”

To earn the Seal, students are required to complete all English language arts courses with a grade point average of at least a 2.0, test proficient or above in state standardized testing, demonstrate proficiency in at least one foreign language by passing at least one of several exams under the Seal’s criteria, or successfully completing four years of study in a world language with a 3.0 or higher grade point average.

“I would like to congratulate all of the students who earned this distinction,” said LUSD Superintendent Paul Gothold. “I want to encourage more of our students to work to attain this accomplishment as these skills will only benefit them as they take their next steps into the world.”
