BALDWIN PARK – Baldwin Park Unified administrators, teachers and community supporters awarded $8,000 in scholarships to 11 high school student seniors on May 4, including a $3,000 prize to a Sierra Vista High student who will begin his studies to become a bilingual Spanish teacher at Mt. San Antonio College in the fall.

The remaining 10 scholarships – $500 apiece – were awarded by the Baldwin Park Organization of Supervisors and Administrators (BPOSA); Baldwin Park Education Association (BPEA); and Delta Kappa Gamma Iota Pi (DKG), a professional honor society of women educators.

Students received the scholarships at the annual Joint Scholarship Event, held at Baldwin Park Unified District Office.

“It’s really thrilling to see these students poised for success at the next stage of their education,” Superintendent Froilan N. Mendoza said. “These scholarships are a recognition not only of what they have accomplished in Baldwin Park, but of what they have the potential for achieving.”

Sierra Vista High School senior Heber Amaya received $3,000 from the Ramona Burnham Scholarship Committee, a group of family and friends of long-time BPUSD educator Ramona Burnham.

BPOSA awarded four scholarships: Liliana Orozco, a Baldwin Park High student who will study psychology at either UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara or University of La Verne; Jenny Thuy Duc Han Vo, Sierra Vista High, who will study physical therapy, UCLA, UC San Diego or UC Berkeley; Gabriela Flores, North Park Continuation High, who will study occupational therapy, Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) or Cal State Los Angeles; Naomi Esquivez, Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education (BPACE), who will pursue cosmetology at BPACE.

BPEA awarded three scholarships: Karla De Loera, Baldwin Park High, who will study physical therapy, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, Cal State Channel Islands; Katherine Sandoval, Sierra Vista High, who plans to study to become a veterinarian, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Fullerton; Helen Robles, North Park Continuation High, who will study to become a registered nurse, Citrus Community College, Cal State Fullerton or Mt. SAC.

DKG awarded three scholarships, all to Sierra Vista High School students: Yailin Benitez, who will pursue a career as a special education teacher, Cal State Fullerton, Citrus College or Mt. SAC; Norma Angelica Gutierrez, who will pursue a career as a preschool teacher, Mt. SAC, East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupational Program; Dafne Canales, who will pursue a career as an elementary school teacher, UC Riverside, Cal State L.A. or Cal State Fullerton.
