BALDWIN PARK – Baldwin Park Unified School District Board of Education member Carlos Lopez, citing health reasons, has resigned his seat effective Oct. 25.

Lopez, a computer technician and 1989 Sierra Vista High School graduate, was elected in November 2013. His term was to end in December 2017, but was extended for a year when the District aligned elections with state elections.

“We are deeply appreciative of the contributions Mr. Lopez made to Baldwin Park Unified,” Board President Cristina Lucero said. “He is a passionate advocate of our students and we wish him all the best in his next endeavors.”

Lopez said he found the experience of serving on the board to be humbling.

“I will always cherish the opportunity to serve our community and the extraordinary students of Baldwin Park,” Lopez said. “This is a tremendous school district deeply committed to benefitting our students.”

Lopez’ resignation will require the District to either hold a special election or appoint a member to serve out the remainder of his term. The Board of Education will meet Tuesday, Nov. 14 to decide on a course of action.

If the Board of Education decides to fill the vacancy through appointment, residents will be invited to submit applications and undergo interviews. The District used the appointment option to replace a board member elected to state office in November 2016.

“Replacing Mr. Lopez will be no easy task,” Superintendent Froilan N. Mendoza said. “He worked tirelessly to promote the welfare of our students, helping to increase their opportunities for success.”
