Former California Superintendent of Schools Jack O’Connell delivered inspirational remarks during a back-to-school kick-off event for more than 1,800 Baldwin Park Unified District employees on Aug. 8 at Sierra Vista High School. The speech followed a 90-minute health fair that began at 7:30 a.m. and talks by Sierra Vista High School Principal Christine Simmons and Baldwin Park Unified Superintendent Froilan N. Mendoza.

The event was attended by members of the Baldwin Park Unified Board of Education, District administrators, staff and teachers. The fair included 17 vendors/sponsors, including Blue Shield, Kaiser Permanente, California Credit Union, Schools First Federal Credit Union and Scholastic Book Fairs. The Sierra Vista Jazz Band will also perform.

Baldwin Park Unified begins its 2016-17 academic year on Thursday, Aug. 11. Eight of 13 elementary schools received state Gold Ribbons in 2015-16. Both comprehensive high schools, both middle schools and both junior high schools received Gold Ribbons in 2014-15. The state has named North Park High School as a Model Continuation High School.
