BALDWIN PARK – Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education (BPACE) instructor Mark Steimle has received a 2017 Excellence in Teaching Award from the California Council on Adult Education (CCAE), recognizing his contributions as a master teacher.

Steimle, who received the honor May 6 at the CCAE conference in Long Beach, has been teaching at BPACE since 1988. His courses include English as a second language (ESL), adult basic education and adults with disabilities.

He is currently lead instructor for the independent study program and teaches high school subjects and GED/HiSET equivalency exam preparation classes.

“Mark is a true innovator who always puts his students at the center of his efforts – which is why he is so effective,” said Dr. John D. Kerr, senior director of adult and community education. “This award is an excellent recognition for all that he does.”

Steimle engages students through a variety of techniques. He was an early adopter of full immersion in his ESL course and quickly mastered interactive whiteboard strategies to integrate technology into his classroom. He also taught BPACE’s first business lab class.

Steimle said his job gives him an opportunity to change lives.

“There is making a living at teaching, but there are some jobs that you can you have made an impact,” Steimle said. “I would say that is a pretty good day at work.”
